The Monday and Wednesday classes came and went, along with Tristan’s make-up oral report. Aaron sat across from Tristan with his desk in between them as they discussed the major themes of Romeo and Juliet. They talked well past the hour Aaron had set aside, and Tristan expressed honest opinions on the text. Aaron listened, enraptured by Tristan’s insightful understanding of the text. Tristan returned Aaron’s copy of the play, leaving the worn book on the corner of Aaron’s desk before he ducked out of the office.

Aaron left the book on the corner of his desk for two days and finally grabbed it on Friday morning. He opened it, tracing over the indentations of Tristan’s scrawled handwriting, flipping through the man’s notes. His smile grew as he flipped through the text. Midway through act three, he found an envelope wedged in the pages, and he knit his eyebrows, pulling it out and opening it.

A note and two football game tickets for the coming Saturday fell out. Aaron bit his lip, smoothing his fingers over the glossy finish. The note had a time and a location on it: eight-thirty, third gym. The gym had an on-campus address. He turned the note over, searching for more information as there was a knock on his door, and his best friend burst into the room.

“TGIF, boo!” Diana cheered. “Let’s get out of here.”

Aaron scrambled, tucking the note and tickets back in the book and shrugging his shoulders. He plastered a smile on his face. “Hi, Diana. H-how are you?”

“Um. I’m happy, and you should be too because it’s Friday. Let’s go get drinks.”

“R-right. Yes. Drinks.” Aaron pinched the bridge of his nose. “Let me get my stuff together, and we can go.”

“No problem. So, how’d the oral report with the football cutie go?”

Aaron’s stomach dropped to his toes at Diana’s innocent question, and he whipped his head around, eyes widening. “What?”

“How’d it go? You talked about it nonstop days ago and I haven’t heard anything since. So, what’s the update? Was it terrible or did he actually have something profound to say?”

Aaron bit the inside of his cheek. “He, um, actually had a lot to say. Things I didn’t even consider. We spent a lot of time talking about how love is consistently compared to death and violence in the text. It’s something I didn’t take notice of before.”

“Oh really? I heard he was here pretty late Wednesday evening.”

“He-he was.”

“He was here late talking about Shakespeare?” Diana teased.

“Don’t joke about it. We talked about Shakespeare. He impressed me with his knowledge of the text and his understanding of it. I gave him a C-plus.”

“And he was happy with it?”

Aaron shrugged. “There’s no way you can make a perfect grade if you do not do the homework assignment on time. It’s pretty simple. A C-plus is more than I should’ve even given him.”

“Okay, salty. Forget I asked.”

“Sorry. I’m just-” Aaron sighed and offered Diana his copy of Romeo and Juliet.

She took it. “Thanks? What are you giving this to me for?”

“Open it.
